ISSYS Introduces WineSenseTM Alcohol Meter

LIGHTNING RELEASES: Ypsilanti, Michigan (1/22/2014)- Integrated Sensing Systems, Inc. (ISSYS) will introduce WineSenseTM Alcohol Meter at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, CA on January 29-30th, 2014.

WineSense was designed to provide the small and medium sized winery a cost effective, accurate and fast method for measuring the alcohol content in wine.   It uses a patent pending micro-distillation technology to separate the alcohol in a small sample of wine.  The distillate, containing the alcohol, is then measured using an on-board ISSYS microCoriolisTM density sensor for alcohol content determination.   An on-board computer controls the process and guides the operator through the steps in the measurement process.  Analysis time is less than 10 minutes and the volume of sample required is only 10ml.

Measurement of the alcohol content of wine, sparkling wine, hard cider, rice wine, alcopops and related beverages is a legal requirement before labeling for sale.   Alcohol measurement is also advantageous for monitoring the progress of wine fermentation and monitoring the aging of wine in oak barrels.   Current methods for alcohol analysis such as enzymatic methods, distillation, gas chromatography or optical sensing are either inaccurate, time-consuming, require experienced operators or are expensive to acquire.  Alternative methods using density, refractive index or boiling point determination tend to be inaccurate since the underlying measurement properties are non-specific to alcohol.

The exclusive microCoriolisTM sensor, at the heart of WineSense, coupled with proprietary software has the power to measure not only % ethanol, but also Brix, liquid density, specific gravity, residual sugar and, the first for the wine industry, liquid viscosity.  Viscosity will provide wine producers a new window into the production and aging process of wine.  These additional capabilities further enhances the usefulness to wine producers packaged enclosure.  Dr. Nader Najafi, ISSYS CEO, stated that “never before has a single product been able to provide the wine industry so much analytical capabilities in such a cost effective package.” ISSYS plans to further develop WineSense, microCoriolis technology to provide real-time monitoring of wine fermentation.
