ActiveOver50 Features On Cover Retired Business Executive Barbara Jue, 65, Heading for the Peace Corps in Moldova

in Press Releases

April 30, 2013, LOS GATOS, CA—Barbara Jue, 65, retired business executive, packs her bags in June for Moldova as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Her former and late husband, Silas Jue, served in the Peace Corps in Madras, India from 1966-68.

Why join the Peace Corps at this age?

“I always wanted to live abroad as a local and take part in the local community and culture than just dropping in as a tourist for a few days,” Jue said.  “I also believed that I had valuable experience from my 30 year career in human resources that would be of benefit to a developing business enterprise.”

Her husband’s stories of India were interesting and the bonds he made with other volunteers were compelling and a factor in her joining the Peace Corps.

The Peace Corps has approximately 8,000 volunteers serving today around the world. Seven percent are over the age of 50. The oldest currently serving is 83. The average age of Peace Corps volunteers is 28.

Peace Corps service is a “give back” way for members of the boomer generation to continue their careers in a non-traditional environment. Their unique life skills and professional experiences allow them to make an instant impact in communities around the world.
